The leader of the Gardai in Limerick has announced that he is to retire from the force next month. Cheif Supt Gerry Mahon served in the force for 38 years. The mayor of Limerick Kevin Kiely praised the work of Mr Mahon saying, "he is one of the most hardworking gardai in Limerick he worked his way from the bottom right upto the top of the force". A close colleague said "it is a black day for Limerick with the announcement of Mr Mahon's retirement".
Chief Supt Mahon' announcement of retirement comes just after his second in command Supt Jim Browne and three Inspectors announced their own retirement.
