Church Scandal: Statement From Joe Lynch (RSF)

ALL PREVIOUS MINISTERS FAILED TO HOLD POLICE
AND CLERGY TO ACCOUNT FOR SERIOUS CRIME

The reaction of the 26 County Administration Justice Minister
to the scandal of abuse and cover up by the Catholic clergy is
a mere public relations exercise, a spokesman for Republican
Sinn Fein said today.

Joe Lynch from Beechgrove Avenue in Ballinacurra Weston,
the RSF chairman in the Southside of Limerick said the angry
declaration of the Minister that a collar will not protest priests
from the law rings hollow because all previous office holders
presided over the inaction of the police.

Limerick politicians must also shoulder responsibility for
the lack of enforcement. Desmond O’Malley in the 70’s,
Michael Noonan in the 80’s and the new EU Commissioner
in the 90’s all had control of the police force yet nothing
was done to tackle abuse and cover up in the Church.

The latest tough words from the Minister in relation to
past events must be contrasted by the current police
inaction in relation to criminal activity within the
Irish banking and financial sector.

All this tough talking from the Minister and the police
is mere window dressing and must be dismissed as
political hypocrisy.

The fact is the police and clergy colluded against the
ordinary decent citizens of the country by not
enforcing the law impartially and worse still allowed
the abuse and suffering of little children to continue.

If the Minister is serious he will unleash the police on
the corrupt bankers and enforce the law without fear
or favour.
